Ecotourism in Donsol, Sorsogon, Philippines started in 1997 when Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Council (SPTC), World Wide Fund (WWF), Department of Tourism (DOT) and other concerned individuals validated the reports which revealed that Donsol harbors have the highest densities of whale sharks in the world.

A year after in 1998, about 900 local and foreign tourists visited Donsol to explore and enjoy the thrill of whale watching and the breathtaking  whale shark interaction which is considered as the best animal encounter in Asia.
